Alcorn State UniversitySchool of Nursing

Alcorn State University’s School of Nursing offers two Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree programs. The programs are designed for Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) prepared Registered Nurses (RNs).

MSN programs are offered for two roles/areas of specialization:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Nurse Educator

Alcorn State University is also a member of the Mississippi Educational Consortium for Specialized Advanced Practice Nursing (MECSAPN). The consortium was formed in 2007 between five universities:

  • Alcorn State University
  • Delta State University
  • Mississippi University for Women
  • University of Mississippi Medical Center
  • University of Southern Mississippi

The consortium offers MSN tracks in the following areas of specialization:

  • Gerontological Nurse Practitioner
  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Concentrations available in Adult Nursing and Family Nursing)

Students admitted to the above consortium programs take the core curriculum MSN courses and graduate from Nurse Practitioner programs at the university the student is attending. However, the specialty courses within the chosen Nurse Practitioner track are taught online to students at all universities by faculty at designated schools in the consortium (which may not be at the school they are attending).

Applicants are required to hold a BSN from an accredited institution with a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) in general education courses and a 3.0 GPA in nursing courses. Students with an overall 3.0 GPA also qualify. They must have completed a course in Statistics. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores must be submitted. Candidates must hold an unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Mississippi and have at least one year of clinical nursing experience within the last five years.

Delta State University Robert E. Smith School of Nursing

Delta State University’s Robert E. Smith School of Nursing offers Master of Science in Nursing degree programs to prepare nurses in the following roles and specializations:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Nurse Administrator
  • Nurse Educator

Delta State is also a member of the Mississippi Educational Consortium for Specialized Advanced Practice Nursing. The consortium offers additional programs in the following specializations:

  • Gerontological Nurse Practitioner

Applicants to the program are required to hold a BSN degree with at least a 3.0 overall GPA. Students must submit acceptable GRE scores obtained in the last five years. Candidates must hold a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Mississippi. A minimum of one year of clinical nursing experience as an RN is required for those specializing as a Nurse Administrator or Nurse Educator. At least one year of clinical practice experience as an RN with direct patient contact within the last three years is required of those entering a Nurse Practitioner specialty program.

Mississippi University for Women Department of Graduate Nursing

The Department of Graduate Nursing at Mississippi University for Women in conjunction with the other universities participating in the Mississippi Educational Consortium for Specialized Advanced Practice Nursing offers Master of Science in Nursing programs in the following specialty areas:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Gerontological Nurse Practitioner
  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Concentrations available in Adult Health and Family Health)

Applicants to the MSN program are required to have earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a regionally accredited institution with a nationally accredited nursing program. They must have a 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale for all undergraduate coursework. Students must have completed an undergraduate course in Statistics. They must submit satisfactory GRE scores. Candidates must hold an unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Mississippi or another Multi-State Licensure Compact state. Students should have at least the equivalent of two years of full-time practice experience as an RN.

The University of Southern MississippiCollege of Nursing

The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Nursing offers multiple pathways to a Master of Science in Nursing degree. They offer an RN to MSN pathway and a traditional MSN pathway.

The RN to MSN program is designed for Registered Nurses with an Associate’s degree in nursing. Students must complete certain general education courses before being admitted. Once admitted to the program, students complete 17 hours of undergraduate BSN coursework before progressing into the MSN coursework.

Through its association with the Mississippi Educational Consortium for Specialized Advanced Practice Nursing, Southern Mississippi offers MSN programs in the following areas of specialization:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Gerontology Nurse Practitioner
  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner(Concentrations available in Adult Health and Family Health)

Applicants entering via the RN to MSN program must hold an Associate’s degree in nursing. They must have completed a series of prerequisite undergraduate general education courses with a grade of “C” or higher. Students must submit satisfactory scores on the GRE. They must hold a current unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in Mississippi.

Applicants entering via the BSN to MSN pathway are required to have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an NLNAC/ACEN or CCNE accredited program with a 3.0 GPA in all undergraduate nursing courses. They must have completed a course in Statistics. Satisfactory scores on the GRE must be submitted. Students must hold a current unrestricted Mississippi RN license.

University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing

The School of Nursing at the University of Mississippi Medical Center offers multiple pathways to a MSN. They offer an RN to MSN pathway as well as a traditional BSN to MSN pathway.

The RN to MSN pathway is designed for Registered Nurses with a diploma or Associate’s degree in nursing. The program is offered on both a part-time and full-time basis. No BSN is conferred.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center offers a variety of MSN programs to prepare RNs for the following roles and specializations:

  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Nursing and Health Care Administrator
  • Nurse Educator

Through their membership in the Mississippi Educational Consortium for Specialized Advanced Practice Nursing, they also offer the following Nurse Practitioner programs:

Those seeking entry to the RN to MSN program must hold a diploma or Associate’s degree from an NLNAC/ACEN or CCNE accredited institution which includes clinical practice courses in nursing. They must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Acceptable GRE scores are required. Students must have completed all prerequisite general education courses from an accredited college or university with grades of “C” or higher. Students must hold or be eligible for unrestricted licensure in Mississippi or one of the compact states to practice as a Registered Nurse. Those entering the Acute Care Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner program must have at least a year of critical care experience as an RN.

Applicants entering via the BSN to MSN pathway must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an NLNAC/ACEN or CCNE accredited nursing program. They must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Students must have acceptable scores on the GRE. They must hold or be eligible to hold an unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in Mississippi or one of the compact states. New BSN graduates must successfully complete the NCLEX during their first semester of MSN coursework. Those applying to the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program must have at least one year of experience as an RN in a critical care setting.

William Carey University’s Joseph and Nancy Fail School of Nursing offers a Master of Science in Nursing degree program designed for Registered Nurses seeking preparation as a Nurse Educator. The program is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis.
